Handball creates hope

The girls of Sierra Leone are not usually allowed to take part in any kind of sport. We want to change that. And we’re trying to do so by supporting HAND - Handball for A New Destiny - to create a unique handball community that seeks to enable girls across Sierra Leone to become stronger together.

FIGHTING FOR VULNERABLE GIRLS IN SIERRA LEONE

Focusing on girls’ right to do sport, the HAND project was officially created back in 2019 by the Olympic gold medalist Josephine Touray. The privotal mission of HAND is to introduce the girls of Sierra Leone to the sport of handball – teaching them the rules of the game, distribute handball equipment and establish physical handball clubs for the girls to meet up regularly and play. But at the same time educate them on democratic principles and human rights.

In most of the world, football is dominated by boys and in developing countries it is exceedingly difficult to break down prejudices and the ancient believes that football is not a sport for girls. And this is why we have placed our focus on handball. It’s a relatively unknown sport in Sierra Leone – and has not yet been “reserved” for boys. With HAND we have the opportunity to build and mold the sport from scratch – and, more importantly, make it a niche where girls are allowed to participate. Naturally.

Handball is for everyone. And we passionately believe in the power of female inclusion within the sport of handball to change attitudes, lives and ultimately the world.

PASSING ON THE JOY OF HANDBALL

Through the KARMA-based Player of The Match Award at the Women’s Handball World Championship 2019 in Japan, hummel® managed to donate no less than 1300 sets of handball equipment to the HAND project. And this year, we’re back for more!

As the official sponsor of the IHF Men’s World Handball Championship 2021 in Egypt, we have once again replaced the traditional award with the KARMA-kind. We are giving the world’s best handball players like Niklas Landin, Valentin Porte, and Mate Lekai the opportunity to pass on the joy of handball by donating handball shoes to the girls of Sierra Leone.

At hummel, we are looking very much forward to follow HAND for years to come and to watch the sport of handball grow in Sierre Leone.

IT’S AMAZING THAT HUMMEL ONCE AGAIN HAS DECIDED TO SUPPORT THE HAND PROJECT AND WE’RE PROUD THAT THE WORLD’S BEST MALE HANDBALL PLAYERS ARE HELPING TO BETTER THE CONDITIONS FOR GIRLS IN SIERRA LEONE
