Company Karma policy

In hummel, we are dedicated towards our value of Company Karma as the guiding philosophy of how we seek to do business, and it has become our version of a more holistic approach to CSR. Company Karma is therefore our global commitment to responsible business practices and the defining character of the way we work with people and the environment. Why this policy?
For the past couple of decades, hummel has witnessed the transformation of the business environment into the transparent, globalized and interconnected organism it has become today. As an active participant within this environment, hummel embraces its global responsibilities to the world and the people in it. Consequently, hummel has developed a number of guidelines and policies, which we follow in our efforts of being a modern responsible company.

hummel’s main approach to corporate social responsibility originates from our founding company THORNICO and is described in the THORNICO Company Karma Report. However, being in the sport-lifestyle industry hummel faces specific challenges that require more distinct policies. 

In hummel, our social responsibility originates from our ability to constantly develop our business and accommodate customer expectations and demands, without compromising on the way we work with people and the environment. As a core element of hummel’s value systems, we consider our engagement within human well-being to be our key responsibility, externally through our “Change the World through Sport” projects and internally with our employees and supply chain partners.

Our Supply Chain Partners
We believe that good and healthy working conditions at our suppliers’ facilities are closely related to better quality and thus more satisfied customers. In our pursuit to ensure that our supply chain partners meet Internationally recognized environment, quality, and labour standards, we endeavor to work with factories that have certifications in regards to this (e.g. SA8000, BSCI, ISO 14001, ISO 9001). 

We have established a three-part approach towards supplier management, which upholds suppliers to our minimum requirements, consisting of:

  1. Code of Conduct
  2. Internal audits
  3. Third party audits

Our Code of Conduct is based on the UN Global Compact and relevant ILO Conventions, which includes policies within the areas of human rights, labour rights, environmental rights and anti-corruption. By signing our Code of Conduct, our suppliers confirm that they and their sub-contractors strive to comply with hummel’s requirements and expectations for responsible business practice. 

Upholding these areas are first and foremost done via internal audits, where hummel representatives visit the suppliers on annual basis to monitor alignment with our Code of Conduct. We further have annual audits conducted by an internationally recognized third-party audit company to secure a high quality external measurement of the supplier’s compliance with our Code of Conduct. 

Furthermore, to ensure that our products are free from hazardous chemicals, our suppliers commit to comply with “hummel chemical restrictions” which are based on Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex®; Product class I & II, and REACH standards. REACH is the European legislation regarding chemicals in products and production processes. To ensure compliance, we conduct random chemical tests each season. 

hummel’s work and collaboration with suppliers and other partners in regards to corporate social responsibility is an ongoing effort within the framework of UN Global Compact and based on UN Guiding Principles. We continuously strive to improve and extend our strategies and policies to secure a high commitment to the well-being of the people we work with and the environment we work in.
